For many drivers, when somebody says the name Land Rover, the image that comes to mind is of the iconic Land Rover Defender making its way through rivers and over mountains with tons of gear strapped to the roof and a man with a safari hat behind the wheel. Perhaps you have noticed a real lack of these models on the streets of Birmingham, Alabaster and Tuscaloosa and that would be for good reason.
Our favorite British automaker halted production of the Defender in 1996 when the size and power of the engine clashed with new emissions and fuel economy standards. Now, it looks like everyone's favorite SUV could make a comeback with a new version based on the Land Rover DC100 concept.
Gerry McGovern, director of Land Rover said that the new Defender could, "Do for Land Rover what the Evoque did for Range Rover."1 That means a huge boost in sales, similar to the one seen by the OEM in 2012.
No other brand has truly been able to fill the hole left in the market by the Defender since it's departure. Now thanks to British engineers and designers creating efficient new Land Rover parts, the Defender should be back and better than ever. "James Bond needs to be able to kick the hell out of it and it will still be able to get up for more."2 adds McGovern.
