It was only earlier this month that the Range Rover Sport shattered the standing record at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in Colorado Springs, CO. This annual event pits all automakers from around the world against each other as they race in time trials up to the top of this craggy mountain over a 12.42 mile course filled with hairpin turns and seep grades. Car manufacturers put forth their best vehicles and are challenged to complete the entire course thousands of feet above sea level as fast as possible. We are very happy to say that the Range Rover Sport came out as king of the climb.
High in the Rocky Mountains, Pikes Peak is the perfect setting to put the handling and performance of vehicles to the test. The treacherous course includes 156 turns, and the lack of oxygen really puts combustion engines to the test. Land Rover was lucky enough to put the fate of their brand in the very capable hands of Paul Dallenbach, a professional driver who completed the entire 12.42 mile course in just 12 minutes and 35.61 seconds. That time is the fastest ever achieved by a standard production car.
Dallenbach commented on his record-breaking time on the day of the race by saying, "There's no margin for error at Pikes Peak - you only need to misjudge one of those 156 turns and you're into the trees or over the edge of the mountain. To take on this place the way I did today, you need complete confidence in your vehicle, and the Range Rover Sport sure gave me that - it's fast, responsive and agile."1
