Ward's two-and-a-half-story mansion at the Vestavia estate was patterned after the circular Temple of Vesta in Rome. Its dark pink sandstone walls were encircled by massive white Doric columns. After Ward's death, the house was used as a tea-room and reception hall before being sold to Vestavia Hills Baptist Church. In 1971, it was demolished to make way for a larger building. The gazebo was later relocated closer to the highway to serve as a landmark gateway into the community. The Vestavia Temple of Sibyl was recognized as an Alabama landmark in 1985 and received a restoration grant in 2015.
Vestavia Hills began development as a residential suburb in 1946 when developer Charles Byrd planned a subdivision on the southern flank of Shades Mountain. The suburb was incorporated as a separate city in 1950, and now houses a population of around 39,000 people.
